Risqué, hyper glossy – here are the extravagant 70s that now more than ever seem to have gain prominence among our favourite glams. It was the disco years when, on one hand, we had the athletic, fresh-faced skin and natural hair looks; while on the other, we had glamorous, boogie night-worthy glitz, shiny red lips, up to the very peak of blue eyeshadow which provide the baseline for the cutting-edge punk aesthetic that would follow.
Would you like to have a groovy time yourself and rock a 70s look? Keep reading and we will tell you everything about trends, ideas and tutorials for the best makeup looks of that decade.

How to do 70s makeup

So, what was makeup like in the 70s? It is important to remember a few points:
1.    The face
The aim is to radiate a healthy glow on your face, and you can still achieve this by applying liquid formulas and opalescent or pearl powders.
Bronzers were applied more liberally on the face, to accentuate the shine and give a sun-kissed effect, while berry shades were a staple on the apples of the cheek. Blush was used in defined stripes on the cheek, rather than blended in to add a touch of drama to the look.
2.    The eye
The eye is all about a shimmering look, so shimmer shadows are used on the eyelids. Shades of blue, green and purple were the popular colours, as well as earthy tones were also popular; white or silver could be used under the eyebrow to add highlight. The darker eye crease, so definite in the 1960s, are also kept well into the 1970s for some makeup looks, however, it was now blended to create a soft depth with a cat-like or almond shape. While mascara is applied both on the top and bottom lashes, the 70s abandon the total-black look for a softer, more colourful shade, according to the taste of the individual.
When it comes to the eyebrows, they are kept natural, brushed, and tamed with an invisible mascara, a brow comb or brush.
3.    The lip
The 70s are fan of gloss and this all happens in the lip area: shiny clear glosses or pink, red and nude lipstick coat the lips to add the final shining bang.

70s makeup tutorial

Let us now have a proper look at how to reproduce one of those 70s makeup dancefloor looks made of shimmery shadows, glitter, metallics and so much more.
First of all, the dancefloor makeup is all about eyes and shimmer, so you will want to keep lowkey with foundation and the rest of your face makeup:
1.    You will want to pick a product that gives you a natural finish look and holds up to whatever plan you have for the rest of your evening.
2.    Make sure you use a foundation brush to achieve a more airbrushed look while making sure you get full coverage.
3.    Then, use a little bit of powder-based bronzer to the outer edges of your cheeks and you will be all set.
And now, the eyes.
1.    Make sure you use primer on your eyelid to make your makeup look last longer and facilitate blending in the eyeshadows.
2.    For the eyeshadow, we suggest you pick a combo of two colours. We suggest using the shade of purple, patting it with a flat blending brush onto the lids and into the natural crease. Then, with the gold shade and using a fluffy blending brush, create an arch shape above the crease, tapering it down and out to create a winged effect.
3.    Finally, using a coloured pen eyeliner (why not trying the purple hue?) create a dramatic wing that continues along the lower lashes. For mascara, choose a formula that aims at elongating their shape.
And what about the lips? We recommend going for a nude lip yet glossy:
1.    Trace your lips with a nude lipstick ensuring full coverage and a long-lasting effect.
2.    Make it shine! Add a touch of gloss with a nude shade of your lip gloss. Little tip? Keep your lip gloss in your bag and touch up your makeup throughout the evening to look as if you have just stepped out of the beauty parlour!

The best 70s makeup looks to get inspiration from

What were the main inspiration for such extravagant and colourful looks?
Well, the 70s were characterised by an increasing feminism, characters from tv shows and movies were becoming more and more present in the average household, while music was extremely eclectic and always around. It was the time when music also started to include video clips, therefore it should not sound surprising that people began to want to emulate the rock, pop or tv show stars much, much more.
Moreover, it was a decade where people were divided into two main categories depending on their love for two extremely different music genres: disco dance and the raising punk, which, albeit being totally opposite for many aspects, had one main thing in common: being radical.
It was the decade when music was dominated by the disco and pop queens, who were boasting astonishingly shimmering looks which were only getting more and more extravagant by the day and were dictating the glam trend of the moment. While the punk movement was characterised by very expressive makeup, worn by men and women alike. The harsh facial makeup was intentionally aggressive and included unnaturally pale skin with dramatic eyes, brows and cheeks.
