False eyelashes: how to apply, remove and clean them

False eyelashes have become a must-have make-up accessory! Easy to apply, they'll make your eye look extra intense, wowing the crowd straight away! Popular with film stars, TV figures, influencers and content creators alike, false eyelashes are the go-to make-up trend at the moment.

But how do you apply them? And, more importantly, how do you remove and clean them properly?

Here are all the tips and tricks you need to achieve the perfect look with false eyelashes!

Types of false eyelashes

There are various types of false eyelashes, but the most common are classic false eyelashes and false strip eyelashes.

The difference is that, with the first one, you have small clusters of lashes to apply to parts of the eye to make certain areas appear fuller (for example, the outer corner of the eye), whereas with the second, the false eyelashes cover the entire length of the eye.

The latter are very easy and convenient to apply because their arched shape with adhesive strip follows the natural shape of the eyelid and adheres better. With an extra drop of false eyelash glue, they'll last even longer.

You can find various types of false strip eyelashes, perfect for any occasion:

  • Natural effect: classic false eyelashes for a natural look, ideal for everyday wear.

  • Lengthening: ultra-lengthening false eyelashes for a magnetic gaze, perfect for evening wear.

  • Clusters: individual false eyelashes that fall under the strip-lash category, but differ because they're made up of small clusters in three different lengths, allowing you to customise the look your way.

  • Volume: volume-enhancing false eyelashes, ideal for those with very sparse eyelashes who want a much fuller look.

  • Exaggerate: as the name suggests, these are false eyelashes with an extreme volumising effect! These might, for example, be suitable for theatrical performances or for very striking and glamorous looks.

False cluster eyelashes may be a little more difficult to apply because they require more practice. But once you know how to use them, they're great fun!

KIKO Milano offers three different versions:

  • 01 Natural: basic false eyelashes

  • 02 Natural: false outer-corner eyelashes that elongate the shape of the eye and create a "cat eye" effect.

  • 03 Natural: individual false eyelashes in sets of 60 clusters of three different lengths.

Applying false strip eyelashes

But how do you apply false eyelashes? Let's go through it step by step:

  1. First, prepare your base by thoroughly cleaning your eyelids and eyelashes.

  2. Use a professional eyelash curler, which will enhance your real eyelashes' natural curve. Don't worry, it's not a torture device! In another article, we explain in detail how to use an eyelash curler properly.

  3. Choose false eyelashes that are similar to your natural ones, both in length and colour. If they're too long, trim them carefully.

  4. Use false eyelash glue. If the applicator is too thick, use a small brush. Apply the glue to the back of the strip (sparingly!) and when it's about to set, place it on your eyelid, starting from the outer corner towards the inner corner.

  5. Now you can choose whether to apply a little mascara or leave it looking natural.

  6. Another useful trick is to apply eyeliner to the lash line, which will help conceal the glue.

Applying false cluster eyelashes

To apply false cluster eyelashes, you'll need to:

  1. Clean your eyelids and real eyelashes thoroughly.

  2. Use a professional eyelash curler.

  3. Take some of the glue from the pack and place it on the back of your hand.

  4. Using eyebrow tweezers, pick up a small cluster and dip the base into the glue. Position the cluster wherever you think is best. If you decide to cover the entire lash line, we always recommend starting from the outer corner and leaving the inner corner empty.

  5. Now you can choose whether to apply mascara or leave it looking natural.

How to remove false eyelashes

Lots of false eyelashes can be removed and reused. So removing them properly is important if you want to reapply and preserve them.

One of the reasons why people decide not to use false eyelashes is because they're scared of removing them, out of fear that the glue may damage their natural eyelashes or eyes. Let's bust this myth, once and for all! False eyelash glue is specially made with cosmetic ingredients and is dermatologically tested, so there's no need to be afraid of it.

Let's go through how to remove them with ease:

  1. First, remove make-up from your face and eyes with make-up remover. Be sure to remove any eyeliner, mascara and eyeshadow. This will make it easier for you to see where you applied the false eyelashes.

  2. Take a cotton pad and soak it in make-up remover. But take note! Use a non-oily make-up remover: an oil-based product would make your false eyelashes unusable, as the glue would no longer adhere to the base.

  3. Now dab the pad close to the lash line, then wait at least 1 minute for the make-up remover to soften the glue.

  4. After this, begin to remove the false eyelashes, starting from the inner corner of the eye and working outwards. If you're using false strip eyelashes, remove the strip by pulling it upwards and following the curve of your eye. If you're using false clustereyelashes, remove the clusters one by one with tweezers. When doing so, move diagonally upwards.

  5. Once removed, remove any remaining glue and continue with your regular beauty routine.

Can false eyelashes be reused?

Yes, false eyelashes can be reused again and again, but it's very important to clean them after each use and store them carefully, following the correct steps.

Always remember to avoid oily products, as they'll prevent the glue from adhering to the eyelid. Here are some tips for cleaning them.

How to clean false eyelashes

Cleaning is essential for reusing false eyelashes.

Once removed, place them on a cloth and, using a cotton bud, remove any remaining make-up.

Once thoroughly cleaned and dried, put them back in their case. Then they'll be ready for the next time you put them on!

When applied correctly, good false eyelashes can really make a difference—your ultra-glam gaze will thank you!
