What does the word “nano” mean when it appears as a suffix in certain ingredients lists?

The “nano” suffix added to a number of ingredients, indicates that these raw materials have a molecular size from 1 to 100 nanometers (a unit of measure 1,000,000 times smaller than a millimeter). The inclusion of the “nano” suffix is a requirement of Regulation no. 1223/2009, which entered into force in July 2013.

Nanotechnology is the innovative treatment of raw materials, thanks to which said materials assume different properties with respect to those displayed on a macroscopic scale. They make unique applications possible and improve the quality of the products. Nanomaterials and nanotechnologies are currently being used in the medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, mechanical and electronics fields. The nanomaterials, approved by the European Commission for use in cosmetics, are safe.

KIKO MILANO strictly complies with the requisites of Regulation no. 1223/2009 and successive amendments, staying constantly up to date with the opinions of the following scientific committees:  the SCCS, Cosmetic Europe and the FDA.
